DLA Piper has been recognized as the world’s largest law firm, by revenue and number of lawyers, in “The Am Law 100,” an annual survey published by The American Lawyer that ranks US law firms on key operating metrics.
In 2012, DLA Piper achieved global revenues of $2.44 billion, increasing nearly nine percent over 2011, compared to an average industry gain of three percent, according to the rankings. The firm’s revenue gains were largely driven by an increase of eight percent in total headcount to 4,036 lawyers.
“Overall, we were pleased with our financial results in 2012, particularly given the challenging global economy, and think this success further validates the geographic and practice group diversity implicit in our global strategy,” said Jay Rains, DLA Piper’s co-chairman (Americas). “In addition, we were gratified that this positioning has helped us increase the rate at which we are called upon to assist clients in matters of significance, in almost every practice area. Our top priority continues to be serving clients effectively and efficiently. This ranking confirms our success in that regard.”
Since the DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary merger in 2005, the firm has emerged as one of the world's leading business law firms. DLA Piper’s focus on strategic lateral hires and its expansion into key geographic markets continues to be a driver of the firm’s global strategy. In 2012, DLA Piper added 97 partners worldwide, which led all other law firms in lateral hiring for the third year in a row.
“We have been successful in attracting high-quality laterals in a competitive marketplace, due in large part to the firm’s global platform, which provides effective solutions to the clients we serve,” said Roger Meltzer, DLA Piper’s co-chairman (Americas). “While environmental challenges remain for all law firms, we remain extremely optimistic about our position and the future.”
As a result of its unprecedented global expansion and strong client service delivery, DLA Piper has developed one of the most powerful law firm brands in the world. Earlier this year, the firm ranked fifth on both Acritas’ US Law Firm Brand Index and its Global Elite Brand Index.
Reflecting the firm’s leadership in representing clients of all sizes in many of the world’s most complex transactions and litigation, the firm received the top ranking for global M&A deal volume during 2012 (mergermarket 2013); ranked second in 2012 global private equity and venture capital deal volume (Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst 2013); ranked as the top litigation department by revenue and number of lawyers (The Lawyer 2012 and The American Lawyer 2012); ranked third for IP litigation among law firms retained as courtroom counsel by America’s top 100 companies (Corporate Counsel 2012 “Litigation Kings”); has been named Global Real Estate Law Firm of the Year for eight consecutive years (International Who’s Who 2012); and has been named International Law Firm of the Americas for three consecutive years (International Tax Review 2012), among many other accolades.
