About the Firm

The whole legal industry is changing. The old establishment is gone, and there’s a new establishment in town. It’s an exciting and dynamic future, which we at DLA Piper are leading.

It’s a new business world, with new client needs. Clients want more than legal advice, they want strategic business advisers that cross borders and geographies. They want global insights with local savvy. And so do we.

DLA Piper is a firm built for this rapidly globalising world, and we’re looking for people to join us on this mission. We’re looking for people who see the world differently, who listen to clients, and who solve their problems, not just give advice. Being well read is good, but being able to read the room is great. We’re looking for people to help make business better for our clients.

DLA Piper is a global powerhouse, consistently ranked in the top five most powerful law firm brands in the world.  As the first global business law firm in New Zealand, we offer clients a unique competitive edge on local and international stages.  Our clients range from some of the world's most renowned global brands to the most influential businesses in New Zealand that are defining the future.

One of our key differentiators is the ability to apply international thinking and experience to the work we do for all our clients, wherever they do business. Across every major sector and specialist practice, the firm provides pragmatic, commercially astute advice.

Working at the Firm

We are a values driven business, and in everything we do connected with our People, our Clients and our Communities, we live by these values:

  • Be Supportive - we care about others, value diversity and act thoughtfully
  • Be Collaborative - we give, we share and we join in
  • Be Bold - we stand tall and challenge ourselves to think big
  • Be Exceptional - we exceed standards and expectations

We are working hard to ensure that our talent pool is diverse. For us, diversity isn't just about visible differences, it's the unique blend of talents, skills, experiences and perspectives that makes each of us an individual.

We know it's crucial to have a culture and environment where those differences are genuinely valued and that's why we strive to be a business where everyone can thrive, develop and succeed based on their talent. Our aim is to build an inclusive and supportive culture where all our people feel they belong and can achieve their best.

Our commitment to pro bono is unparalleled and engrained in our culture. Our approach to pro bono is consistent with our vision to be "truly local, truly global" and we have a strong pro bono practice that is appropriate to the local circumstances and cultures in which we work.

Here in New Zealand we have a 26-year pro bono legal relationship with the Starship Foundation, the philanthropic arm of New Zealand's national children's hospital, Starship.   We also support The Prince's Trust NZ, StarJam, Oxfam, Canteen, Community Law and a large range of other organisations.

Our global pro bono initiative, New Perimeter, provides long term pro bono legal assistance in under-served regions around the world and our New Zealand lawyers are actively involved in this programme.

Our Global Scholarships Programme is the first of its kind. We support students from the world's least developed countries to access funding, mentoring and placements across our global practice over a two-year period, helping to develop the next generation of leaders.

In 2019, we donated over 1,840 pro bono hours locally and more than 200,000 pro bono hours globally.

We are committed to providing and maintaining a workplace that is supportive of both work and life arrangements. With a global reach unlike any other law firm in New Zealand, we are able to offer international secondment opportunities to selected employees. This is a valued offering which provides great development opportunities for our people.
