Pro bono spotlight

DLA Piper is extensively involved in pro bono service in all the communities where we work and in the global community.  Here are a few examples of recent pro bono work by members of our Real Estate team.

New Perimeter training on negotiating international agreements:  Casey Sobhani participated in a five-day virtual training on negotiating international agreements for public sector lawyers from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The training was conducted by New Perimeter, DLA’s nonprofit affiliate that provides long-term pro bono legal assistance in under-served regions around the world.

Support to small businesses during the pandemic:  Rocky Delgadillo, Jeffrey McDonald, and Matthew Nichols collaborated with several business improvement districts to support small businesses navigating new zoning and land use rules to permit their businesses to continue operating safely during the pandemic.

Election protection:  Erica Sitkoff served as a remote call center captain, advising new volunteers who are answering voters’ questions about their rights through Election Protection’s 866-OUR-VOTE hotline.

Serving the immigrant community:  Lynn Cadwalader, Vicente Reyes, Sara Hernandez, Karen Hallock and Emily Fox served immigrants in a variety of matters, including defending immigrants facing removal and seeking asylum, helping immigrant survivors of domestic violence obtain temporary visas, and assisting dreamers with renewal of their DACA status.

Assisting unaccompanied minors:  Adrianne Zahner was featured in Kids in Need of Defense’s (KIND) Boston Pro Bono Attorney Spotlight earlier this year for her work representing unaccompanied children entering the United States immigration system alone.
