About

Nathan Heller serves as a business lawyer and litigator with experience in key commercial practice areas, including class action litigation, product liability, insurance, insurance receivership and anti-corruption compliance.

Nathan counsels clients in those areas and assists them in developing litigation and corporate governance strategies tailored to their needs. He has experience in a variety of federal and state courts at both the trial and appellate level, and is a member of DLA Piper's Appeals and Post-Trial Advocacy practice group.

In addition, Nathan assists corporate clients in developing compliance programs consistent with global anti-corruption laws, such as the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the UK Bribery Act 2010. He focuses on the drafting of codes of conduct, anti-corruption policies and related procedural documents, as well as training programs. In this capacity, he assists clients with identification of particular risks facing their business and tailoring a compliance program to meet their risk profile.

  • Won dismissal of a RICO case alleging fraud by a foreign affiliate of a global pharmaceutical company
  • Won summary judgment on standing grounds against a foreign plaintiff alleging fraud in a multi-million dollar commercial real estate transaction
  • Successfully resolved trade security violations brought against the developer of a cutting-edge investment management software platform
  • Favorably resolved multiple consumer fraud class actions against a global automobile manufacturer
  • Defeated multiple class certification matters on behalf of a national insurance company involved in class coverage disputes
  • Obtained an appellate victory for a multinational pharmaceutical manufacturer in a breach-of-contract action stemming from the closure of a manufacturing facility
  • Represented a state insurance regulator in a receivership matter involving an insolvent long-term-care insurer
  • Created an enterprise-wide anti-corruption compliance program for a global industrial coatings manufacturer
  • Created a procedure to identify, report, and investigate potential ethical violations for a global cosmetics manufacturer

Pro Bono

Nathan maintains an active pro bono practice at DLA Piper and has recently represented a victim of sex trafficking in obtaining vacatur of more than one hundred criminal convictions that the victim incurred while being trafficked in multiple US jurisdictions.

In 2013, the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia (PILCOP) presented Nathan and his team with the Thaddeus Stevens Partnership Award, which recognized them for their pro bono representation in a case alleging racial discrimination in a public school district. The case addressed claims that minority students were systematically and disproportionately placed in special education programs and the low-level classes as a result of their race.

Before joining DLA Piper, Nathan served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Kent A. Jordan of the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and to the Honorable Christopher C. Conner of the US District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
