Brent Meckling practises litigation with a focus on corporate/commercial, environmental and real estate litigation.

For over 20 years, Brent has acted as trial and appellate counsel in a broad range of business disputes and regulatory proceedings on behalf of individual, corporate and institutional clients. He has extensive litigation experience involving shareholder and partnership disputes, contaminated sites and environmental assessments, real estate development and land use, commercial leases, fraud, energy and natural resources, professional negligence and breach of contract claims ranging from software development to the protection of confidential information.

Brent focuses on developing strategies and legal positions with clients based on a thorough assessment of a dispute and a careful evaluation of the options available to obtain maximum results. He appears regularly in the British Columbia Supreme Court and Court of Appeal and before commercial mediators, arbitrators and administrative tribunals, including the British Columbia Property Assessment Appeal Board and Environmental Appeal Board.

Brent has broad experience in prosecuting and defending claims concerning agreements for the purchase and sale of real property and related commercial development, including pretrial injunctions seeking to freeze lands, shares in companies or disputed funds. On numerous occasions Brent has successfully obtained court orders removing restrictive covenants from title which were impeding the development and use of real property. He also advises real estate industry professionals on the payment and recovery of fees and commissions and related contractual obligations and liabilities.

Brent is the author of the Environmental Disputes chapter of the British Columbia Business Disputes Manual published by the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia. He has been counsel on several leading contaminated sites cases in BC and frequently advises land owners and developers on issues surrounding claims for the recovery of remediation costs and damages for historic or migrating environmental contamination and related interactions with the BC Ministry of Environment.

Before attending university, Brent played Major Junior Hockey in the Western Hockey League for the Medicine Hat Tigers as a draftee of the Detroit Red Wings. While studying at the University of Calgary, Brent was a 4 year member and captain of the Varsity Hockey Team. He is a long time youth sport coach on Vancouver’s North Shore.
