Eric Skeffington concentrates his practice on real estate development, acquisitions and dispositions, finance, joint ventures, land use and zoning. Eric has additionally represented clients in leasing negotiations, and previously oversaw retail leasing efforts at several US-based international airports.

Eric has represented owners and developers of a wide array of development projects—both in Boston and elsewhere—from due diligence, acquisition and permitting stages through joint venture financing, construction loan financing, and disposition. In connection with those efforts, Eric has a breadth of experience in local, state and federal permitting matters and has negotiated a number of development agreements and land disposition agreements with private parties and public entities.

Eric additionally helped form and represents a number of multi-jurisdictional real estate portfolio funds, leading efforts on their financings, dispositions and acquisitions. His clients range from small, privately held real estate companies to multi-national REITs conducting cross-border transactions. Recently, Eric has represented clients in connection with several acquisitions and dispositions with values exceeding $100 million and in connection with loans with values ranging from $15 million to $870 million in a number of US markets, including Boston, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Southern Florida and Colorado.

Eric is also extensively involved in many of DLA Piper’s pro bono initiatives. In addition to running DLA Piper’s veteran’s legal clinic since 2015, he has advised and helped form eight 501(c)(3) nonprofits, regularly participates in the Greater Boston Legal Services housing clinic, and has represented charitable organizations and indigent individuals on a host of real estate and other legal matters.

Recent Projects:

  • Representation of developer in connection with the South Station Air Rights Project, a 678-foot mixed use tower and bus terminal expansion being developed in the air rights over Boston's South Station using an $870 million construction loan.
  • Representation of developer in connection with new mixed-use project in Boston containing over 900,000 square feet of mixed-use space and over two acres of open space.
  • Creation of private real estate fund and such fund’s subsequent (i) closing on a $575 million revolving line of credit and (ii) acquisition of over 20 properties with an aggregate value exceeding $1 billion. 
  • Representation of institutional client in connection with its $43.5 million acquisition and $26.5 million financing of a portfolio of medical office buildings in Florida through multiple joint ventures.
  • Representation of institutional client in connection with its $180 million refinancing of ground leased tower in New York City.
  • Representation of institutional client in connection with its $226.5 million acquisition and $125 million financing of multifamily tower in San Bernardino, California.
  • Represented developer in connection with $101 million construction loan for residential tower in Downtown Boston.
  • Managed leasing efforts relating to COVID rent relief across portfolios for U.S. real estate investment management firm over $9 billion in gross assets under management from over 310 institutional clients.

Prior Experience

During law school, Eric worked at the Boston Redevelopment Authority, where he assisted lawyers on a variety of municipal land use and permitting procedures, including Article 80 and G.L. c. 121A and c. 121B review.

Civic and Charitable

Eric devotes an extensive amount of time to civic activities. He is a member of the Boston Bar Association, where he previously served as Boston College's student liaison to the Real Estate Steering Committee and as New Lawyer Representative to the Real Estate Steering Committee. Eric is also the Vice Chairman of the Woburn Community Education Foundation, a nonprofit benefitting students in his hometown of Woburn, Massachusetts, has served on the Leadership Team at Team IMPACT, a Quincy, Massachusetts-based nonprofit benefiting children with life-threatening illnesses, and has volunteered as a coach with Woburn Youth Basketball for a number of years.
