Jack often advises on innovative or ‘first of a kind’ projects, and is proud to have played a role advising on a number of significant energy transition and sustainable development projects across Australia and the broader Asia-Pacific region.

He has advised across the full spectrum of energy and natural resources sector-related legal issues, including project acquisitions and disposals, project developments, commercial and host government contracts, approvals, and regulatory issues, acting both in private practice and as in-house legal counsel.

EXPERIENCE

  • Advisor to Australian and international oil, gas and LNG market participants on acquisitions and disposals, project developments, joint ventures and joint operating arrangements, gas and LNG sale and purchase agreements and transportation arrangements, services contracts, underlying tenure and concession arrangements (including production sharing contracts), approvals and regulatory frameworks.
  • Advisor to global renewable energy sector investors on project developments, commercial contracting, offtake arrangements, tenure and approvals for solar, wind, battery storage, hydrogen and green fuel projects across Australia. Jack was previously in-house counsel at SunCable where he advised on development of the Australia-Asia Powerlink Project and related company developments.
  • Advisor to offshore wind sector investors, project developers and service contractors on the nascent offshore wind industry in Australia, including on successful applications for Feasibility Licences, operation of the Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act and regulations, and drafting and negotiation of early-stage project contracts.
  • Advisor to Australian mining and resources sector participants, on acquisitions and disposals, project developments, joint ventures, and offtake contracts, as well as advising on statutory frameworks governing mining (in particular Queensland legislation).
  • Advisor to clients on net zero transition matters, including complying with Australian emissions reporting legislation and the reformed Safeguard Mechanism, securing access to carbon credits for Safeguard Mechanism compliance and corporate net zero target purposes, and preparing for and complying with Australia's new mandatory sustainability reporting regime.
  • Advisor to participants in the Australian Carbon Credit Unit market (since its inception in 2011) and participants in the global voluntary carbon market, on M&A activity (including acquisitions of individual carbon farming projects up to multi-project platforms), project development agreements, carbon service provider agreements, project funding and offtake arrangements, and carbon credit trading.
  • Since 2017, advisor to the Government of Timor-Leste on the concessions, regulatory frameworks and related host government arrangements for offshore oil & gas projects in the Timor Sea and associated public international law matters, including advising on negotiation and implementation of the landmark Maritime Boundary Treaty between Timor-Leste and Australia (2018).
