Jan De Beul

Jan De Beul is a dispute resolution lawyer with a particular focus on the financial services, transportation and aviation, construction and real estate, and consumer goods sectors.

Jan represents clients before the Belgian courts and before arbitral tribunals in both domestic and cross-border disputes, and advises on contentious and potentially contentious matters. While some disputes proceed to litigation, many can and should – where appropriate – be resolved amicably, in the best interests of the client and its business.

He handles a wide array of corporate and commercial disputes, including those relating to share sale transactions, services agreements, distribution agreements, pre-contractual liability and other forms of non-contractual liability (tort). He also regularly acts for real estate developers, investors and contractors in construction, lease and other real estate-related disputes.

A significant part of Jan's work involves contentious insolvency matters. He represents creditors (such as banks or suppliers), companies in distress, individual company directors, investors, and both Belgian and foreign insolvency practitioners. These matters include disputes concerning outstanding liabilities, the enforcement of security (including mortgages, pledges, retention of title and guarantees), as well as directors’ liability.

He also frequently assists and represents clients in matters relating to the enforcement of judgments and the freezing of assets (conservatory attachments). He has experience with the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitral awards, and has been involved in a number of asset-tracing matters.

Lastly, since the 2024–2025 academic year, Jan has been affiliated with the Institute for Civil Procedure at the Leuven Centre of Public Law (KU Leuven) as a teaching assistant, supporting professors in various civil procedure courses. He has authored several articles on litigation-related topics in peer-reviewed journals, with a particular focus on urgency proceedings.
