Joel focuses his practice on patent prosecution and counseling, including domestic and international patent preparation and prosecution, portfolio management, and patent strategy. His experience involves a wide variety of computer hardware and software technologies, including speech processing, user interfaces, artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, data compression, 3D printing, autonomous vehicles, and clean technology.

Joel has considerable experience counseling clients ranging from emerging solo inventors to worldwide leaders in technology and innovation, including a leading smartphone and computer manufacturer. In particular, Joel has developed and managed patent portfolios spanning many countries, with aim to establish a cohesive global strategy while focusing on the legal nuances and market considerations of each region. He is also skilled at conducting invention disclosure meetings, adding valuable insight once patent applications enter into examination.

Prior to entering private practice, Joel was a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he examined applications related to telecommunications and computer networking. He also served as an examiner mentor while at the USPTO.

Joel earned his JD from Santa Clara University School of Law. During law school, Joel was a lead technical editor on the Santa Clara High Tech Law Journal. He earned his BS in electrical engineering from University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he also served as President of Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical and computer engineering honor society.

Joel is admitted to practice in California and Colorado, and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
