James Lee is a business attorney focused on (i) complex commercial transactions, with a particular emphasis on transactions involving intellectual property assets and cutting-edge technologies, and (ii) corporate matters such as M&A, emerging growth and venture capital, and other financing transactions.

In the technology space, James assists clients with strategic partnerships, AI technology agreements, digital infrastructure transactions, XaaS (anything-as-a-service) transactions, and global strategic sourcing and outsourcing.

A substantial part of his corporate practice involves cross-border transactions and investments. James regularly helps domestic and international companies invest, expand, relocate, or build new facilities in the United States. A certified export compliance professional with an advanced academic background in economic statecraft, James has a strong interest and background in geopolitics and economic policies that affect transnational business activities.

Prior to joining DLA Piper, James gained valuable experience in dispute resolution at a State Attorney General's office. James earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, and his B.A. and M.A., respectively, from Johns Hopkins University and its School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Prior Experience

While attending law school, James was part of a Space Situational Awareness joint collaboration project for the United States Department of Defense. He was also on the Editorial Board of the Virginia Journal of Social Policy and the Law.

As a summer associate at another Am Law Global 100 law firm, James helped update the Maryland General Corporate Law treatise, particularly as it relates to real estate investment trusts (REITs).
