John is a legal director in the London Restructuring team with fourteen years PQE during which time he has obtained significant experience in all aspects of non-contentious restructuring and insolvency assignments. He acts for the main clearing banks, private equity firms, IPs, property advisors and borrowers, with a particular focus on financial restructuring and distressed real estate.

John was seconded to the special situations team of a UK clearing bank dealing with restructuring, work-out and insolvency issues in 2013, and undertook a six-month secondment to DLA Piper's Paris office in 2016. He also undertook a secondment with the loan management unit of a UK clearing bank in 2019.

EXPERIENCE

  • Advising the directors of all of the member subsidiaries of Carillion plc (other than six "Topco" entities which entered liquidation on 15 January 2018). This focussed stabilisation of the Group, orderly disposal of assets including solvent sales of profitable corporate entities, sales of equity joint venture interests, advice to directors and placing entities into insolvent liquidation.
  • Advising a syndicate of mezzanine lenders made up of debt funds on a EUR1.245bn debt for equity restructuring, which resulted in the group of mezzanine lenders writing off their mezzanine debt for a controlling stake in the equity of the Maxeda DIY Group.
  • Acting for a syndicate of lenders in relation to the financial restructuring of a large UK oil refinery business owned by Essar Oil.
  • Advising the sponsor, the board and ultimately the administrators in relation to a pre-pack administration sale of Synseal, a leading UK glass, window and door manufacturing business.
  • Advising a major UK bank on its significant real estate exposure to a high net worth individual and family including dealing with security issues, consensual disposals, appointment of fixed charge receivers and court actions by numerous other creditors including applications by them to marshal the bank's security.
  • Advising the administrators of a steel stockholder business, including dealing with three separate sales, resulting in the provision of over 400 jobs.
  • Advising UniCredit Bank AG on the sale of a non-performing loan, undertaking the preparation of a red flag review, assisting with due diligence queries from interested parties, preparing and negotiating the debt trade and risk participation documentation.
