Cillian Moynihan advises a wide range of private equity, growth equity, venture capital and sovereign wealth funds and investors on domestic and international, cross-border private equity and corporate matters, including equity investments, acquisitions, disposals, initial public offerings, joint ventures and other corporate transactions. He has acted across multiple industries, including real estate, technology, retail, insurance, energy and life sciences, and within developed and emerging markets.

Cillian previously worked as general counsel at an international growth equity fund. Prior to that, Cillian was a partner in the European Private Equity team at a top tier US law firm in London, which he joined in 2015. He also spent time on secondment at a Canadian private equity fund.

  • Acted for an Australian private equity fund on its USD2bn joint venture investment in the data centre sector.
  • Acted for a European investment manager on its EUR500m acquisition of a European science park owner and operator.
  • Acted for a US private equity fund on its EUR2bn take-private of a European hotels group.
  • Acted for an Asian private equity fund on its USD3bn acquisition of a global logistics group.
  • Acted for a Canadian private equity fund on multiple real estate transactions, including the acquisition of a European student residence platform, a joint venture investment in a UK science park, large property acquisitions and related financings in Europe, as well as numerous restructurings and portfolio acquisitions.
  • Acted for an Asian sovereign wealth fund on numerous joint venture matters and bid transactions.

Private Equity (Corporate)

  • Acted for a US private equity fund on its EUR400m preferred equity investment in a Formula 1 team.
  • Acted for a US private equity fund, as well as the consortium including three other international investors, on its GBP3.4bn take-private of an international telecoms business.
  • Acted for a US private equity fund on its EUR5.3bn joint take-private of a German pharmaceutical company.
  • Acted for a US private equity fund on its EUR1bn acquisition of a UK / Ireland energy group.
  • Acted for a US credit fund on its GBP80m strategic investment into a UK insurance business.
  • Acted for a US private equity fund on its majority acquisition of a European technology group.
  • Acted for a UK private equity fund on multiple buy-out acquisitions within the European food sector.

Growth Equity / Venture Capital

  • Acted for an international growth equity fund (as in-house counsel) on the establishment and first close of its new growth vehicle, as well as on multiple equity investments (Series A to Series A, as well as growth investments), debt investments, follow-on investments, portfolio restructurings and exits, across developed and emerging markets.
  • Acted for a US venture capital fund on its Series D investment in a UK semiconductor business.

Prior Experience

Prior to joining DLA Piper, Cillian was General Counsel at an international growth equity fund. Cillian also worked as a Corporate M&A partner in the European Private Equity team of a top-tier U.S. law firm in London. In addition, Cillian previously completed a legal secondment to the real estate group of a Canadian private equity fund.
