About

Philip Hancock advises on construction, infrastructure and engineering disputes and projects facing technical, legal and commercial challenges.

He has several years’ experience acting for a range of clients across a number of different sectors, on a variety of different projects, and in different dispute resolution forums. He helps clients achieve their goals, in circumstances that are often extremely time-pressured, cost-sensitive, and rife with commercial and legal issues.

He has particular experience working with clients in the Energy and Natural Resources sector, and has acted on a variety of power generation projects, in particular a number of renewable energy projects (onshore wind, solar, biomass), as well as non-renewable (oil and gas, and coal-fired power plants).

He has experience in many of the major forms of construction and engineering contracts (FIDIC, NEC3, JCT, as well as bespoke contracts).

Philip acts for all companies in the supply chain, from funders, employer and developers, to contractors and subcontractors, to consultants. He has worked very closely with well known industry experts in delay & disruption, quantum, and experts specialising in myriad technical issues.

He has experience in a range of sectors, including Energy and Natural Resources (principally power generation projects), Infrastructure, Construction and Transport (a large number and variety of construction and engineering projects, major infrastructure projects including ports and hospitals, and several rail/rolling stock disputes), Real Estate (residential and mixed-use projects, manufacturing projects and warehouses, hotels), Life Sciences (chemical manufacturing projects), Industrials, Financial Services, and Insurance.

  • Acting for a Korean EPC Contractor in LCIA Arbitration proceedings defending a substantial delay and disruption claim (c. USD 100m) from its major building subcontractor, in relation to a power plant in the Middle East.
  • Acting for an international EPC Contractor in a FIDIC DAB pursuing a substantial delay and disruption claim (c. USD 200m) against its employer, a state-owned utilities company, in relation to a power plant in Africa.
  • Acting for an international EPC Contractor in ICC Arbitration proceedings in relation to a substantial delay, disruption and termination claim (c. USD 200m) relating to a renewable energy project in England.
  • Acting for an international fund defending a global claim brought in the Technology and Construction Court by its main contractor in relation to the refurbishment of a luxury hotel in England.
  • Acting for an international pharmaceuticals manufacturer defending a series of adjudications brought by its main contractor in relation to construction of new manufacturing facilities in England.
  • Acting for an insolvency practitioner in relation to potential claims of an insolvent major UK contractor against various consultants relating to significant cost overruns (GBP 50 million) on the construction of a new hospital in England.
  • Acting for a major international logistics company defending potential claims by its main contractor relating to fire safety works at a manufacturing facility in England.
  • Acting for an international consultant defending claims brought by its client (GBP 40 million) relating to works at a mixed-use site in England.
