About

Marie Kingston is senior legal counsel in the Responsible Business team at DLA Piper. She has many years’ experience in syndicated lending, anti-corruption, transparency and accountability, children’s rights, safeguarding, and environmental protection.

Marie has primarily worked with clients in the following sectors: banking and finance, transportation, aviation and logistics, government and civil society. She also has considerable experience building successful partnerships between sectors. Through her international work, Marie has developed extensive networks and working relationships with Embassies and diplomatic missions.

She has designed projects to assist clients to tackle corrupt practices and help governments to strengthen legal capacity to investigate and prosecute complex economic crimes. Marie is uniquely placed to support clients to manage risks associated with acquisitions, investments, and business operations in high risk geographies and has significant experience working in Eastern Europe and Africa.

  • Implemented UK Government-sponsored justice reform projects in Albania, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan
  • Developed and managed a judicial integrity project in Madagascar

Prior Experience

  • Prior to joining DLA Piper Marie was a Programme Director at ISLP-UK. In this role she was responsible for anti-corruption, transparency and accountability.
  • Previously practised banking and aviation finance law in London-based international law firms and in Central Europe.
  • Lecturing posts (1) MBA candidates at a university in London (2) Law Society rule of law projects in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Georgia (pro bono).
  • Worked as Legal Director in a European office of a Big Four accountancy firm.
  • Marie started her career as a banking solicitor in London qualifying at Stephenson Harwood and advising on syndicated lending and aircraft finance transactions.
  • Given her background in Slavonic languages Marie was assigned to represent clients in countries of the former Yugoslavia.
  • Marie spent several years working in Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Bosnia including a two-year secondment to a leading commercial firm in Zagreb and a further two years at KPMG where she was Head of Legal and Regulatory for Croatia and Bosnia.
