Health Systems Alert

Free and charitable medical clinics are an important safety net for millions of under- and uninsured Americans. Despite recent political developments, about 30 million Americans remain uninsured.

Working on behalf of AHLA, the American Health Lawyers Association, DLA Piper attorney Dennis Williams was a contributing author to the Legal and Operational Guide for Free Medical Clinics, created to help community and healthcare leaders who are working to build a free or charitable medical clinic.

The guide aims to give clinic organizers a broad understanding of the array of legal and operational issues that must be taken into consideration in founding a free clinic. Topics covered include:

• the scope of services to be provided
• funding sources
• 501(c)(3) tax-exemption
• recruitment and licensure of medical volunteers
• insurance coverage and liability
• prescription drug management
• patient privacy
• quality of care and other patient care issues.

AHLA has made the Legal and Operational Guide for Free Medical Clinics available to all as a free download.
