Intellectual Property and Technology News Series

The heart of the new way

The heart of the new way our clients are operating in this new millennium is data protection and cybersecurity. At DLA Piper, we assist businesses every day in managing this increasingly important risk area, helping clients around the globe to implement a 360-degree approach to creating, managing and maintaining a secure cyber DNA in the face of escalating threats and legal requirements, in-house turnover and a shift in the duty of care for companies and directors.

Frank Ryan, Global Co-Chair and US Chair, Intellectual Property and Technology

Our teams of lawyers and consultants work together globally to help clients evolve their business models for the ever-changing laws around the world. Europe’s GDPR has rightfully gotten a lot of attention. At the same time, of course, we can’t lose focus on other jurisdictions. As we report in this issue, the laws in jurisdictions across Asia are rapidly changing. And in our very interesting centerfold article, we cover another aspect of data protection – the duty to preserve text messages.

Also in this issue, we have the immense pleasure of introducing you to a wonderful new friend and partner, Doug Emhoff, who has joined DLA Piper in both our Los Angeles and Washington, DC offices. Doug’s arrival is an important strategic move for both our IPT practice and for our wider global sector capabilities in Media and Entertainment. Doug has significant litigation experience in industries important to the firm, including digital media, entertainment, media, sports, advertising, technology, hospitality, production and character licensing, and he has built offices from the ground up in important markets like Los Angeles and San Francisco. We look forward to having him help us further build out our West Coast capabilities. And Doug is a great guy. Indeed, I can say that of all my colleagues. The articles in this issue, and every issue, of IPT News are brought to you by a great, hard-working, dedicated team. I am inspired by them every day, and I am pleased to bring you their insights. Please enjoy.
