DLA Piper wins Pro Bono Programme of the Year at the Transatlantic Legal Awards

DLA Piper has been recognised by The ALM, publisher of The American Lawyer and Legal Week, with the 2016 "Pro Bono Programme of the Year" award. The firm received this honour at the at Transatlantic Legal Awards held in London on 7 June 2016. The prestigious awards ceremony honours the best legal work conducted between the United States and Europe.

DLA Piper received this award in recognition of its signature project: 'Upholding the Rights of Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Stateless People'. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has found that worldwide displacement is at a record high with 59.5 million people forcibly displaced due to wars, conflict and persecution. Across Continental Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States, DLA Piper has developed a range of bespoke initiatives in partnership with leading NGOs and intergovernmental organisations to address the key issues faced by asylum seekers, refugees and stateless individuals.  The project sought to address the complex legal issues facing these extremely vulnerable individuals, to inform them of their rights, to assist them to navigate the complex legal regulations and to build the capacity of other actors in the sector.

The project involves lawyers from the Austrian, Belgian, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Russian, UK, Ukrainian and US offices. DLA Piper's expert partners in the project include the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE), the UNHCR, Habeas Corpus, Refugee Action, the Belgian Refugee Council, the Italian Refugee Council, Coram Children's Legal Centre and the Urban Justice Center.

With over 6,500 hours devoted to the project, DLA Piper lawyers were able to assist numerous NGOs and individuals. This is the second award that DLA Piper has won for this signature project. In 2015, DLA Piper was awarded the prestigious European Award for Partnership in the Public Interest by PILnet, a global network for public interest law.
