On November 13, New Perimeter, DLA Piper's nonprofit affiliate that provides long-term pro bono legal assistance in under-served regions around the world, and Mexico Appleseed, a nonprofit organization that aims to address systemic legal and economic problems, celebrated ten years of collaboration to create a sustainable pro bono culture and network within the legal profession in Mexico.
Since 2008, DLA Piper lawyers and Mexico Appleseed have worked to encourage a culture of pro bono service by teaching about pro bono and access to justice at law schools in Mexico, including at Universidad Panamericana, where the program has reached more than 400 students. Lawyers from DLA Piper's global offices have traveled to Mexico each year over the past ten years to participate in the program, teaching law students on pro bono and access to justice topics. Mexican lawyers who have received the training have gone on to create and lead pro bono programs at their law firms.
In addition to Universidad Panamericana, Mexico Appleseed and New Perimeter have held sessions at a number of other universities, where they have reached more than 300 students. These include:
- Universidad Panamericana's campus in Aguascalientes
- Tec De Monterrey, ITESM on three campuses: Campus Ciudad de México, Campus Santa Fe en la Ciudad de México and Campus Estado de México
- Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)
- Universidad La Salle
- Escuela Libre de Derecho
- Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM)
- Universidad Anáhuac
- Universidad InterContinental
"For the past ten years, we have been honored to work with Mexico Appleseed to support a culture of pro bono and teach law students. The enthusiasm of the students and their passion for access to justice has been an inspiration, and we look forward to our continued work together," said Lisa Dewey, director of New Perimeter and US pro bono partner for DLA Piper.
Maru Cortazar, executive director of Mexico Appleseed, said, "For more than ten years, Mexico Appleseed has had the privilege of having a close relationship with DLA Piper. This has been a pillar for the development of our organization in Mexico. Without the support of DLA Piper, Mexico Appleseed would not be the same organization it is today."
DLA Piper's Mexico City office, DLA Piper Gallastegui y Lozano, also works closely with Mexico Appleseed to serve local nonprofit organizations and develop resources to promote access to justice in Mexico. In 2018, DLA Piper Gallastegui y Lozano received Mexico Appleseed's Pro Bono Merit Award for its extraordinary contributions to access to justice in Mexico.
