Carl Wessel joins DLA Piper's Litigation practice in Washington, DC

DLA Piper announced today that Carl Wessel has joined the firm's Litigation practice as a partner in Washington, DC.

Wessel joins from Pfizer, where he served as senior vice president, associate general counsel and chief litigation counsel. In this role, Wessel was responsible for managing all of Pfizer's litigation on a global level. This included antitrust litigation, product liability cases, general commercial litigation, intellectual property litigation, government investigations and employment law.

Wessel previously was a partner at DLA Piper from 2010 to 2016. In his practice, he has represented pharmaceutical clients in federal and state criminal and civil government investigations and False Claims Act litigation, in addition to conducting internal investigations for clients in the industry.

He has substantial experience addressing issues encountered by pharmaceutical clients, including off-label promotion, anti-kickback violations, manufacturing issues, drug pricing issues, clinical trial and drug safety issues and issues concerning the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Wessel has also managed product liability litigation and other complex commercial litigation and represented pharmaceutical clients in several high-profile congressional investigations. He has extensive experience coordinating parallel government investigations, litigation, congressional hearings and internal investigations.

"Carl is one of the leading white collar and compliance practitioners in the life sciences sector, and we are very excited to welcome him back to the firm," said Loren Brown, co-chair of DLA Piper's US and global Litigation practices. "His extensive experience and deep involvement in a number of key areas affecting pharmaceutical and medical device companies will be a tremendous asset to our clients."

"Carl is well-respected both in the region, among his peers in the pharmaceutical industry, and of course among his colleagues here at the firm," said Jeff Lehrer, managing partner of the firm's Washington, DC, office. "His skillset will be an incredible addition to our litigation team."

Wessel received his J.D. from Boston College Law School and his B.A. from Columbia University.
