DLA Piper receives 2020 Beacon of Justice Award from National Legal Aid & Defender Association

DLA Piper is pleased to announce that the firm has received a 2020 Beacon of Justice Award from the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA).

This year’s Beacon of Justice Award honors law firms with pro bono programs serving vulnerable people fleeing to the US border, including helping pro se individuals better represent themselves, as well as providing direct legal representation for individuals and families in family separation, detention and immigration proceedings.

DLA Piper was recognized for the notable growth of its pro bono practice in this area and its focus on the needs of immigrant children, especially those facing abuse, neglect and abandonment. The NLADA also cited DLA Piper’s collaboration with the American Bar Association to create template pleadings and a practice advisory on habeas corpus petitions for unaccompanied children as a demonstration of the firm’s thoughtful approach to pro bono work in this space.

“We are honored to play a role in advocating for the rights of vulnerable individuals and families seeking a better life in the US,” said Lisa Dewey, pro bono partner and director of New Perimeter, DLA Piper's nonprofit affiliate that provides long-term pro bono legal assistance in under-served regions around the world. “I am proud of the dedication to serving immigrants that our lawyers have demonstrated through their pro bono service, and we look forward to continuing this important work.”
