Teale Toweill is Of Counsel in the Litigation and Regulatory Group in London, with over 10 years’ experience advising clients in a broad range of complex cross-border contentious matters, including regulatory investigations, litigations, and arbitrations. 

Teale has experience structuring and conducting internal investigations, coordinating with and instructing forensic and other external experts, and representing clients in front of various regulatory bodies. She also has experience throughout the litigation life cycle and has argued before US state and federal district courts, including in class action and arbitration-related disputes. Finally, she has broad expertise in international commercial and treaty arbitrations, having worked on significant arbitration disputes under a range of arbitral rules. She is admitted to practice in California, New York, and Washington, D.C., as well as being a qualified solicitor.

EXPERIENCE

  • Designing and conducting internal investigations into various corporate clients regarding allegations of misconduct relating to accounting irregularities, abuse allegations, or other matters.
  • Representing multinational bank in investigation by US Department of Justice into alleged fraudulent and anticompetitive conduct in foreign exchange business.
  • Representing multinational bank in its internal investigation of front running allegations.
  • Representing training hospital in its internal investigation of potential Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations.
  • Defending multinational telecom company against USD200+ million claim brought under LCIA arbitration rules arising out of shareholder dispute.
  • Advising governmental client regarding long-term legal and political strategy in relation to unprecedented diplomatic dispute in the Middle East.
  • Defending Al Jazeera Media Network and related Al Jazeera entities in multi-million-dollar defamation lawsuit in Washington, D.C. arising from the publication of an investigative documentary.
  • Representing Republic of Argentina before the DC Court of Appeals in successful effort to overturn arbitral award arising under the UK-Argentina Bilateral Investment Treaty, and in opposition to BG Group plc's appeal to the US Supreme Court.
  • Representing Japanese automotive parts manufacturer in nine separate litigations in antitrust class action multi-district litigation based in Eastern District of Michigan.
  • Representing oil producing subsidiary of state-owned entity in litigation to enforce ICC arbitral award in the Southern District of New York and in subsequent appeal to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
  • Representing class of homeless and formerly homeless individuals in pro bono class action lawsuit brought in Washington D.C. in relation to violations of minimum wage and antitrust law.
  • Representing Russian Federation in USD114b treaty arbitration under the Energy Charter Treaty, brought by former shareholders of bankrupt Yukos Oil Company.
  • Representing foreign private equity fund in confidential ICC arbitration and subsequent mediation relating to post-closing adjustment dispute.
