DLA Piper and Pfizer receive Pro Bono Partner award from Pro Bono Institute

DLA Piper is pleased to announce that the firm, together with Pfizer Inc., was honored by the Pro Bono Institute with the organization’s Corporate Pro Bono (CPBO) Pro Bono Partner Award.

The award recognizes honorees that have demonstrated a sustained impact “addressing a critical legal need in a vulnerable community through pro bono legal work.” CPBO, a project of PBI, created the CPBO Pro Bono Partner Award to recognize innovative collaborations between in-house legal departments, law firms and public interest organizations.

For 15 years, DLA Piper’s pro bono work with Pfizer has focused on sustainable projects with legal services and public interest organizations to expand access to justice. Projects include:

  • A decade-long legal clinic with the New York Legal Assistance Group to provide pro bono legal services to cancer patients;
  • A collaboration with the National Center for Access to Justice, Deloitte and others to revise the Justice Index to increase access to justice in state courts across the United States;
  • An innovative multi-year project to help train the next generation of lawyers and build capacity within the legal community in Zambia through legal research and writing courses; and
  • Representation of immigrant children together with Kids In Need of Defense.

“Our ongoing pro bono collaboration with Pfizer has resulted in the establishment of long-term projects that have had an impact on communities around the world,” said Lisa Dewey, DLA Piper’s pro bono partner and director of New Perimeter, the firm’s nonprofit affiliate that provides long-term pro bono support in underserved regions around the world. “Together, we’ve been able to magnify the impact of our pro bono efforts, and we look forward to continuing to work with Pfizer to put the skills and talents of our lawyers and volunteers to work for those in need of legal assistance.”
