DLA Piper is pleased to announce that the Appleseed Mexico Foundation has awarded the firm the Alexis Rovzar Pro Bono Medal of Merit for its pro bono contributions to access to justice in Mexico. The Appleseed Mexico Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is part of a network of 17 public interest justice centers in the United States and Mexico whose mission is to build a more just society with greater access to the law with a focus on long-term proposals and solutions.
At an award ceremony on February 13, Maru Cortazar, Executive Director of Appleseed Mexico Foundation, stated, "There is a complex path towards equality in Mexico, but recognizing lawyers and law firms who work tirelessly to grant equal access to justice is a big step towards the improvement of the social conditions in Mexico. On behalf of the nonprofit sector and the civil society, we are truly thankful for all the work and commitment that DLA Piper Gallastegui y Lozano offers to the community."
Accepting the award on behalf of the firm, Mexico City-based partner and pro bono coordinator, Gabriela Alaña noted, "The effect that pro bono work has on the lives of those who need it, through the goodwill of those who have the opportunity and the willingness to do it, is amazing." She added, "We do not need to perform superhuman efforts to help; we only need willingness and a good attitude."
Some of DLA Piper's pro bono efforts in Mexico include working closely with UNICEF in protecting children's rights, serving a low-income community through a legal advice clinic, and offering legal services to nonprofit organizations that work on education issues, environmental protection, food aid and anti-corruption matters. Our lawyers also worked with Appleseed Mexico Foundation and another local foundation to help victims of the earthquakes that occurred in Mexico last September.
