Irene J. Sherman

Irene J. Sherman is a senior attorney in the National Security and Global Trade group at DLA Piper. Irene provides strategic legal advice to a diverse range of clients on complex legal compliance issues, including those relating to economic sanctions involving the U.S. Department of the Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), antiboycott regulations before the U.S. Department of Commerce and foreign direct investment filings before the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).

Irene has a decade of experience counseling clients on sanctions compliance, including leading and executing complex compliance investigations, designing and implementing compliance policies and procedures, and successfully representing clients before OFAC. Irene has prepared numerous agency filings, including requests for authorization, voluntary disclosures, and responses to administrative subpoenas. Irene has substantial experience advising insurance companies on compliance with sanctions obligations.

Irene advises clients on compliance with Commerce Department antiboycott regulations, including identifying and reporting violations and how to navigate the Office of Antiboycott Requestor List.

Irene also manages CFIUS and foreign direct investment reviews involving multiple jurisdictional analyses to determine whether a CFIUS or non-U.S. foreign-direct investment filing may be warranted or required.

In the field of energy and environment, Irene represents clients before the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy and advises clients on energy and environmental legislation and regulations.
