DLA Piper announces beta launch of Artificial Intelligence Scorebox tool
DLA Piper is pleased to announce the beta launch of its Artificial Intelligence Scorebox, a digital tool aimed at helping organizations and businesses assess AI adoption readiness based on a series of questions and criteria.
The firm recently submitted the beta version of the tool to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) request for information to help inform the development of a framework for managing risks associated with artificial intelligence. The goal of this framework will be to enable technology developers, users and evaluators to improve the trustworthiness of AI systems.
To develop the AI Scorebox, DLA Piper’s global team of attorneys and policy advisors assessed various approaches to AI regulation by governmental organizations, including the G20, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), European Commission, Council of Europe, White House and others, and synthesized the key concerns and risks for the deployment of complex AI technology.
Beta versions of the Scorebox have been tested with a variety of organizations in the technology, financial services, retail and public sectors in the US and across the globe.
“The AI Scorebox is aimed at helping organizations better evaluate and manage characteristics of AI trustworthiness, including accuracy, reliability, privacy, security and safety,” said Mark O’Conor, the DLA Piper partner who spearheaded the creation of the tool. “We are doing an increasing number of internal diagnostic reviews of AI systems for clients in highly regulated sectors like healthcare and finance. This tool provides an important entry point for thinking about these issues, alerting companies to the need for ensuring safe, fair and compliant AI.”
“Organizations around the world are involving their legal, technical, financial, ethics and senior leadership teams while using the Scorebox, since the deployment of AI is something that needs to be assessed from many perspectives,” added Tony Samp, a DLA Piper senior policy advisor in Washington, DC. “The global proliferation of guidance on AI and emerging regulation means that keeping track of it all can be overwhelming for any organization. The AI Scorebox provides them with a central tool to make sense of the evolving regulatory environment and allows an entry point for businesses to evaluate the maturity of their AI readiness.”
DLA Piper was among the first law firms to establish a formal Artificial Intelligence practice in 2019. The practice focuses on assisting companies as they navigate the legal and policy landscape of emerging and disruptive technologies, while helping them understand the legal and compliance risks arising from the creation and deployment of AI systems. The firm advises on all legal and policy aspects of the AI ecosystem, including compliance with an ever-increasing array of global regulations specifically targeting AI; procuring and contracting for AI-enabled systems and services; IP strategies for AI and AI-device systems; big data, data management and cybersecurity; privacy laws and data protection; liability for operators and users of AI systems; and issues of ethics and transparency.
