Paul Hardy has over 30 years' experience working as a lawyer and policy adviser, including practising as a barrister in court, working in the European Commission in Brussels and as a senior civil servant in the UK Houses of Parliament. He joined DLA Piper's Trade and Government Affairs team in 2017 and has been a partner since 2022.
Paul advises on customs compliance, preferential and non preferential trade rules, trade defence and wider World Trade Organisation rules. His professional background makes him well placed to navigate clients through the complexities of the UK’s cross-border regulatory environment, and to understand the new opportunities and risks that will arise.
Paul also heads up the UK Government Affairs practice (Ranked band 1 by Chambers UK 2027), providing clients with strategic policy advice and engagement strategies for achieving outcomes in Whitehall and Westminster. Paul's team combines political and parliamentary know-how with the legal and regulatory expertise of an all-sector law firm to help clients achieve a desired result. The UK government affairs team is part of an interconnected global government affairs platform within DLA Piper, with centres in Brussels and Washington DC.
Paul holds the qualification of practicing barrister, and also remains a "door tenant" at specialist EU and administrative law barristers' chambers in London, Francis Taylor Building, where he last practiced as a self-employed member of the Bar.
Paul Hardy's reputation as an expert adviser in the field of customs and trade law and policy has been recognised by being ranked as a "Leading Partner" by Legal 500, indicating "the strongest partners in their field, leading on market-leading deals and endorsed by peers and clients alike".
