About

Josh Jantzi is a partner in DLA Piper's Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto offices and co-chairs the firm's Canadian Regulatory and Environmental Law group. He maintains a leading litigation and administrative law practice focused on environmental, energy regulatory, natural resource, Indigenous, transportation, municipal, and constitutional matters. Chambers, Lexpert, The Legal 500 Canada, and The Best Lawyers in Canada consistently recognize him for excellence in these areas.

Josh has represented energy and mining clients in precedent-setting regulatory and environmental assessment matters, including Chippewas of the Thames First Nation v. Enbridge Pipelines Inc., 2017 SCC 41 before the Supreme Court of Canada.

Josh is called to the bars of Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, and practices regularly across federal and provincial jurisdictions. Josh has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada, the superior courts of Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario, the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal, and the Tax Court of Canada. He regularly advocates before a host of regulatory and administrative bodies, including energy regulators, utilities commissions, environmental protection tribunals and appeal boards, land tribunals and commissions, natural resource boards, governmental ministries, and municipal boards.

Josh's environmental practice includes acting in investigations, impact assessments, land and water use, contaminated sites and brownfield redevelopment, waste management, spill response, carbon pricing and emissions credits, chemical regulation, licensing and permitting, product stewardship, and protection of species and cultural heritage. He also handles transportation of dangerous goods, environmental risks in corporate transactions, enforcement proceedings, regulatory representation, administrative appeals, and related civil litigation.

Josh's regulatory practice includes development, review and assessment of energy and natural resource projects including pipelines, upstream petroleum and natural gas (PNG) production, liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities, hydro power plants, fracking operations and gas plants, wind farms, solar farms, marine terminals and shipping, water diversion works, open pit mines, forest product facilities, and waste management facilities.

Josh's Indigenous law practice focuses on challenges to government decisions based on the Crown's duty to consult and accommodate in relation to asserted and established Aboriginal and Treaty rights and title. He also acts in matters of: treaty implementation and modern land claim agreements; economic development and corporate structuring for Indigenous-owned entities; consultation protocols, and impact and benefit agreements; Indigenous governance and the application of customary laws; Crown fiduciary duty and treaty obligations; reserve land management and development; negotiation of self-government agreements and implementation of Indigenous legal orders; and cultural heritage and repatriation issues, including sacred sites, burial grounds, and Indigenous property.

Josh's municipal law practice includes advising on land use planning, development permitting, property assessment and taxation, licensing, expropriation, and bylaws and other subordinate legislation. He represents clients before municipal councils, boards, and the courts. His work also covers municipal liability, intergovernmental disputes, procurement, water rights, budgeting, privacy compliance, environmental regulation, heritage conservation, and governance matters such as elections and conflict of interest. Josh provides strategic legal counsel to municipalities, developers, and stakeholders navigating the complex intersection of local governance, administrative law, and land development.

Josh's civil litigation and arbitration practice includes contract, tort and IP disputes spanning the energy, construction, aviation, telecommunications, infrastructure and public-private partnerships (PPP) industry sectors. He maintains a significant practice litigating matters before the Federal Courts.

Josh has taught full-credit Indigenous Law courses at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law and serves as a guest instructor in the law school's North American Energy Law, Transportation Law, Environmental Law, and Negotiation courses. He is an officer of the Canadian Bar Association's (CBA) National Environmental, Energy and Resources Law Section (Past Chair), and sits on the executive committees of the National Aboriginal Law and Administrative Law Sections.
