ESG Talks - Mark Vester and Léon Korsten on the transition to a circular economy for plastics

In episode three of ESG Talks, Mark Vester of SABIC and Léon Korsten of DLA Piper, led by Harm Edens, talk about the transition to a circular economy and the role that the chemical sector plays in it, particularly for plastics.

The use of plastics is expected to continue to grow because to its advantageous carbon footprint and the versatility of the material. However, the production and especially the inadequate disposal of large quantities of plastics also has negative consequences for the climate and environment. This creates a negative public opinion. The aim is to close the chain by recycling plastics, so that the same quality of plastic can be produced again from the residual product, while the environmental footprint should be better than from the alternative.

The guests discuss the steps the chemical industry itself is taking to become more sustainable through innovation and recycling. They also discuss the role that European legislation and regulations play, particularly the question if cooperation within the sector to accelerate innovation is permitted under competition law.
