Pro Bono Q&A: Maryland Legal Aid (MLA)'s Julianne Tarver

DLA Piper is proud to partner with Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) in their efforts to provide life-changing civil legal assistance to tens of thousands of economically disadvantaged and vulnerable Marylanders every year. Here we speak with Julianne Tarver, MLA’s pro bono program director, about the challenges facing the organization and ways people can help.Julianne Tarver

Q: Tell us about Maryland Legal Aid.

Julianne Tarver: At Maryland Legal Aid (MLA), we’re dedicated to preserving the basic human needs and basic human rights of clients, particularly as they navigate the justice system. We help clients remedy their civil legal issues and become empowered to overcome challenges, achieve stability and independence, and an overall better life. And our staff, pro bono attorneys, community partners, and general supporters all play important roles in ensuring that the legal playing field is leveled so that those most in need achieve equal access to justice.

Q: What are some of the more pressing issues facing clients now?

Julianne: MLA’s clients are unable to access justice in many different capacities:

  • Clients lack stable internet and great phone service to virtually access assistance;
  • Clients are trapped with their abuser and are unable to seek a safe environment for themselves and their children;
  • Clients are losing their jobs and are unable to pay rent or are facing foreclosure. As a result, they’re facing illegal lock outs and are unable to obtain their belongings from inside of their home;
  • Clients are in need of estate planning documents to protect their loved ones;
  • Many clients have questions about the probate process and changing deeds after their loved ones pass;
  • Clients need help filing for bankruptcy, public benefits, and criminal record expungements.

Q: How can people help?

Julianne: We are especially in need of volunteer attorneys. Volunteers can assist clients by talking them through their legal issues and assisting with the necessary paperwork and/or representing them in court. MLA provides mentorship, malpractice insurance, and trainings in all areas of law. You can also make a difference by making a tax-deductible donation.
