Inspirational Women in Life Sciences - Rowan Moore & Emma Marsden-Edwards, Waters Corporation
For the fourth interview in our Inspirational Women in Life Sciences Series, Gary Davies and Celia Johnson-Morgan are delighted to be joined by Rowan Moore, Senior Director & Portfolio Owner - Quan MS, and Emma Marsden-Edwards, Discovery Program Lead, Waters Corporation, an organisation that unlocks the potential of science through analytical measurement technology, deep scientific expertise and reliable insights to enhance human health and well-being.
Both Emma and Rowan shared stories about their introduction to the world of mass spectrometry and how their passion for science was encouraged by people already working in the field. Through these role models and their generosity, their imaginations were captured by the science, the cutting-edge technologies, and the excitement of a never-ending learning journey.
One of the challenges discussed was imposter syndrome, and the value of having a supportive network and being kind to yourself.
"I've always kept true to myself and ensured that I was working with people that I like, respect and trust and that the work I'm doing is inspiring to me and gives me energy, that's always been most important, but it doesn't mean that that doesn't come with fears of inadequacy." – Rowan.
Being in a male-dominated industry meant that both interviewees encountered gender stereotypes, and felt they had to work extra hard to convince their customers that they had the necessary skills to help with their instruments. One positive takeaway is that they feel like there is a shift in attitudes, with an increasing focus on competency and performance, irrespective of gender.
Our guests also emphasised the importance of having role models for younger people. They feel privileged to work with amazing female analytical scientists who inspire them to come into work everyday and work on innovations and products that make a tangible difference in peoples lives.
"There's so many big names in our field that they're just a huge inspiration, and the work they do is truly life changing." – Emma.
