Ryan Black receives Adjunct and Volunteer Service Award from Peter A. Allard School of Law for his ‎contributions to Business Law Clinic

DLA Piper (Canada) LLP Partner Ryan Black has received the Adjunct and Volunteer Service Award from the University of British Columbia’s Peter A. Allard School of Law‎.

The Adjunct and Volunteer Service Award recognizes people who have made extraordinary long-term contributions to the law school in a volunteer or adjunct capacity. Ryan was nominated for his many contributions to the Richards Buell Sutton LLP Business Law Clinic, which he has led for three years as a volunteer adjunct professor (and the past two years with his co-instructor Tyson Gratton, also of DLA Piper). Preceding his role at the Business Law Clinic, Ryan was also a volunteer at Allard for several years, as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee of the Centre for Business Law, guest lecturer and panelist at numerous events.

The Business Law Clinic provides law students with an educational opportunity to use their substantive understanding of business law in a clinical setting for the benefit of the public. This setting offers students a unique opportunity to develop a number of practical and legal skills. In addition to providing a client facing experiential learning environment for students, the Clinic also works to expand access to legal services for a range of business and non-profit organizations.

“Ryan brings so much heart to the Clinic. Having watched him over the last three years, I have been amazed by his enthusiasm, dedication to the students, and generosity in giving back to the community,” said Dr Carol Liao, internationally respected scholar in ‎business law and Director of the Centre for Business Law at Peter A. Allard School of Law. “Ryan gives 110 percent to the students, purely by his love for teaching and the joy he gets in seeing his students learn new things, while helping those in the community attain their goals. He is an exemplary role model for us all and I am thrilled to see him receive this very well-deserved recognition.”

Ryan practises technology-related business law, with a particular focus on ‎intellectual property, information technology, video games and esports, and ‎internet-facing businesses. Ryan combines his expertise in these areas with a ‎background in corporate/commercial law to provide ‎clients with market-leading legal advice.
