DLA Piper launches programme to support entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds
DLA Piper has today announced the launch of a programme to provide bespoke support to entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds. The Bespoke Accelerator Programme (BAP) was developed for founders and businesses in the Hatch Enterprise network, which supports underrepresented entrepreneurs to imagine, launch and grow sustainable and impactful businesses through tailored support, community and partnerships.
The BAP focuses on supporting company founders so they are able to contribute to the economic empowerment of individuals and communities which have traditionally found it more challenging to develop a good idea into a successful business.
Through this programme, three businesses from the Hatch network were selected after they pitched their business to a DLA Piper selection committee which included lawyers, business service colleagues, and members of the Mosaic Steering Committee, DLA Piper’s people network focused on cultural and ethnic background, race and religion). The founders of these businesses will have access to mentors, legal and business support, training, development, and networking opportunities. Over a period of 18-24 months, DLA Piper will help these entrepreneurs to define and reach their goals, providing each business with bespoke support tailored to their individual needs.
The three businesses that have been selected are:
• Planet Nourish - an AI-powered digital platform on a mission to reduce diet-related conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes and obesity in people of colour.
• Sheer Chemistry - a revolutionary hosiery brand that makes tights that perfectly match all brown skin tones.
• shelff - a community-based rental platform dedicated to giving access and choice when it comes to decorating living spaces.
The programme was launched through an event that saw founders attend a training session which aimed at developing an understanding of Design Thinking and how it can benefit their businesses. This was followed by a networking event with members of DLA Piper.
The BAP forms part of DLA Piper’s wider social impact strategy, which includes a range of activities to promote racial equity, reduce inequality and create opportunities and pathways for people from under-represented groups. The firm is committed to providing quality pro bono services, mentoring, funding and the expertise and skills of our people to practically support communities. Collaborating with charity partners, community groups and NGO’s on these activities provides us with a clear view of the challenges faced by people from underrepresented groups and, in turn, helps informs our internal policies, processes, and decisions.
