DLA Piper advises UPMC on Sports Surgery Clinic acquisition

DLA Piper has advised renowned international healthcare provider UPMC on its acquisition of the Sports Surgery Clinic (SSC), an independent hospital located in Santry in Dublin, Ireland.

SSC will be UPMC’s fourth hospital in Ireland, joining UPMC Whitfield in Waterford, UPMC Kildare in Clane and UPMC Aut Even in Kilkenny. The acquisition will expand UPMC’s ability to provide world-class orthopaedic and sports medicine care in Ireland. Pennsylvania-based UPMC has 92,000 employees worldwide, working across 45 hospitals and almost 5,000 physicians. It is a not-for-profit organisation reinvesting profits into expanding facilities and clinical research.

Providing high-quality healthcare in the South East since 2006, UPMC provides a range of services including orthopaedics, ophthalmology, oncology, sports medicine, and surgical specialities. Outpatient care is provided across three UPMC Sports Medicine clinics, the UPMC Institute for Health, Carlow Outreach Centre, UPMC Hillman Cancer Centre radiotherapy locations at UPMC Whitfield and in Cork, and the UPMC Concussion Network.

The DLA Piper team acting as legal counsel to UPMC was led from the Dublin office by David Carthy (Country Managing Partner, Corporate). It included Steven Duggan (Legal Director, Corporate), Declan Lavelle (Partner, Tax), Graham Quinn (Partner, Real Estate), Barry Noonan (Legal Director, Real Estate), Liam Mills (Legal Director, Finance, Projects & Restructuring), Darach Connolly (Legal Director, Competition and Regulatory), Jack Kelly (Senior Associate, Corporate), Alice Duffy (Legal director) and Hayley Maher (associate).

Commenting on the deal, David Carthy said “It was a pleasure to work with UPMC on this deal which will enhance UPMC’s offering of orthopaedic and sports medicine healthcare in Ireland. We look forward to continuing to support UPMC’s growth both in Ireland and internationally.”

David Beirne, senior vice president of UPMC International, commented: “The addition of SSC positions UPMC as an all-Ireland network of care and builds upon our commitment to clinical excellence since establishing our first cancer centre here in 2006.

“This is the latest expansion of UPMC’s clinical care in Ireland and complements our existing network of orthopaedic care in the U.S. and Europe, ensuring that we can provide access to care for more patients, close to home and we were delighted to work with the DLA Piper team, our long-time international legal counsel, on this acquisition.”
