Sophia has extensive experience in advising clients in the energy, infrastructure and construction sectors on high-value and complex international and domestic disputes. From initial advice to full resolution of the matter, Sophia has supported her clients under all main dispute resolution procedures: arbitration (ICC and LCIA), litigation, domestic UK construction adjudication, dispute adjudication boards and mediation.

Sophia has experience of a range of construction projects involving waste to energy plants, canal expansions, vessels for offshore works, LNG mega projects, railway and metro track and terminals, ring road construction, airports, and mining.

Sophia also has experience in non-contentious construction matters, having advised clients on a range of standard and bespoke construction agreements for major developments in the UK.

EXPERIENCE

  • Advising an engineering and commissioning contractor in an AUD2bn ICC Singapore arbitration concerning the disputed termination of an EPC subcontract to build a captive Combined Cycle power station on an LNG facility.
  • Advising a consortium of international EPC contractors in pre-arbitral proceedings and DAB referrals regarding delay and disruption to construction of an airport in the Middle East.
  • Assisting with the early settlement of a dispute regarding the inadequate repair or mine shafts in Russia.
  • Advising a third-party funder with a potential investment in a construction dispute in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Advising a Japanese conglomerate in relation to various shareholder and funding agreements for the financing of the construction and operation of a drilling vessel and related assets as part of its pre-dispute correspondence and strategy.
  • Advising a large mining corporation on its operations in the Caribbean and West Africa.
  • Advising the Panama Canal Authority in relation to the construction and engineering aspects of the USD5.25bn Panama Canal Expansion Programme and a number of technical and high-value disputes in DAB and ICC arbitration proceedings. This included: 
    – ICC Arbitration proceedings relating to aspects of the concrete works (including a jurisdictional challenge) with a value of approximately USD620m;
    – DAB proceedings concerning the interpretation of contractual provisions;
    – Employer’s Determination on a global earthworks delay and disruption claim – USD1.4bn;
    – general advice in relation to certain Employer’s claims; and
    – general advice in relation to issues involving suspension and termination.
  • Advising a multinational engineering firm in relation to an infrastructure project in Saudi Arabia with a value of USD 400 million; advising an international structural façade consultant in ongoing payment and variation disputes in connection with the design and construction of a façade for a research facility in Saudi Arabia. The matter culminated in ICC Arbitration proceedings in London with a value of USD100m.
  • Advising an international EPC contractor and specialist waste-to-energy plant provider in major disputes concerning the design of a waste-to-energy plant in the UK.
  • Advising a leading contractor in the oil and gas industry in a dispute regarding variations and prolongation in relation to the supply of two vessels. The matter culminated in LCIA Arbitration proceedings in London with a value of USD14m.
  • Advising a medical technologies company which was successful in three adjudications arising from major demolition works.

Prior Experience

Sophia joined the firm in March 2024, having worked at two leading US law firms in their London offices. Prior to that Sophia trained and practiced at a magic circle law firm.
