Jon Chiam practises in the areas of commercial disputes, regulatory investigations and international arbitration. He has over 7 years of experience acting for clients in the oil and gas, mining and information technology sectors.

Jon has a strong understanding of each stage of the dispute resolution process and has assisted clients both in Australia and more broadly in the Asia-Pacific region in pursuing and protecting their interests through various forms of dispute resolution. Jon’s previous experience and completion of a Bachelor of Commerce assists him in providing commercial and practical advice and strategic value to his clients.

More recently, Jon has advised clients in high-profile regulatory investigations, including some of Australia's largest data breaches and alleged breaches of Australian sanctions regimes and assisted clients with acquisitions by scheme of arrangement.

  • Acting for a significant construction and engineering joint venture contractor in numerous adjudications under Security of Payment legislation and international arbitrations concerning the construction of an LNG plant and associated infrastructure in Australia
  • Acting for a leading global information technology, consulting and business process services company in domestic arbitrations in relation to the termination of long-term IT services contracts
  • Acting for the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation in the Victorian Royal Commission into the Casino Operator and Licence (Crown Melbourne)
  • Advising the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner on its investigations into some of Australia’s largest and most high-profile data breaches
  • Acting for an ASX-listed company in relation to an investigation by the Australian Federal Police with respect to purported breaches of an Australian sanctions regime
  • Acting for an ASX-listed company in relation to an investigation by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission with respect to purported breaches of directors duties and contraventions of continuous disclosure obligations
  • Acting for an ASX-listed gold miner in in civil fraud and breach of fiduciary duty proceedings against a former employee
  • Acting for an ASX-listed silver miner in a dispute against a substantial shareholder relating to the exercise of an anti-dilution right under a collaboration agreement
  • Assisting the DLA Piper corporate team with acquisitions by scheme of arrangement in the WA Supreme Court and the Federal Court, including:
    –Advising Strike Energy Limited on its acquisition of Talon Energy Limited (AUD 143m);
    –Advising Technology Metals Australia Pty Ltd on its acquisition by Australian Vanadium Limited (AUD 84m);
    –Advising Accel-KKR on its acquisition of K2fly Limited (AUD 38m);
    –Advising TES Global on its acquisition of Schrole Group Limited (AUD 18m).
