Coran Darling is a dual-qualified technology lawyer whose practice focuses on guiding companies as they navigate the challenges of emerging technology regulations and policy, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI), open-source, and data governance. He is a recognized thought leader on the responsible governance and ethical deployment of AI and a go-to advisor for the identification and mitigation of AI risks across operations and transactions. Coran is a trusted industry leader in the development of international policy and regulatory AI initiatives, which builds on his role as an advisor for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), International Organization for Standards, and the European AI Office. Coran is a founding member of the US Department of Commerce and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST's) Center for AI Standards and Innovation, where he continues to develop international best practices that form the foundation of how organizations approach development and deployment of AI. Most recently, Coran was a member of the team responsible for developing guidance on how to comply with obligations for providers of general-purpose AI models under the EU AI Act.

Coran maintains an active pro bono practice that includes representation of veterans during their application for Combat-Related Special Compensation.

EXPERIENCE

  • Selected by the EU Artificial Intelligence Office to contribute to the development of its general-purpose AI code of practice
  • Advised AI, robotics, and software companies on understanding and mitigating technology risks, including unintended bias and hallucinations
  • Represented several buyer and seller-side organizations during corporate transaction negotiations for management and mitigation of AI, data, and technology risks
  • Performed legal red teaming of AI chatbots and tools for several Fortune 50 organizations
  • Created generative AI standards and policy for several multinational organizations seeking compliance with multiple jurisdictions
  • Developed comprehensive data governance frameworks aligned to industry standards and international best practices across the UK, US, and EU
  • Established technical standards for the management of generative AI tool use, including content generation, recording, transcription, and summarization
  • Developed governance and responsible AI frameworks and policies compatible with international best practices and regulation for several multinational organizations
  • Briefed C-Suite members of international technology organizations on AI technical compliance and regulatory risks
  • Drafted company and non-governmental organization responses to enquiries into development of future AI regulation and regulator guidance, including product liability, safety, and intellectual property
  • Advised international technology companies on ownership of AI generated works, including computer code and synthetically authored text
  • Performed comprehensive assessments of cybersecurity threat vectors for international industrials organizations
