About

Muhammed is a South African qualified lawyer experienced in construction and engineering law matters - particularly dispute avoidance / resolution.

Muhammed has advised clients across the infrastructure, construction, mining and energy sectors. In order to collaborate effectively with clients and develop strategic approaches, he strives to understand the business of his clients and their requirements.

Muhammed has experience assisting clients at all stages of projects.  He has regularly advised clients on contractual and claims related matters, and has also been involved in several arbitrations and other dispute proceedings.

In addition to construction and engineering matters, Muhammed has assisted clients in forensic investigations and commercial litigation.

Prior to joining DLA Piper (Qatar) in January 2023, Muhammed held positions as in-house counsel at an international engineering consultancy and also for a number of years as senior associate at one of South Africa’s big 5 law firms and later at a leading international law firm.

EXPERIENCE

  • Advised a multinational rail transport specialist on claims arising from a variation order changing the location of a manufacturing facility. The claims ranged in value, with the uppermost amount being USD 500 million. *
  • Representing an international consulting engineering consultancy in arbitration proceedings defending claims from the EPC contractor for USD 55 million arising from alleged delayed design and allegations of deliberate default / reckless misconduct. Client acted as design engineer on a power plant in Ghana.*
  • Advised a multinational rail transport specialist on claim relating to a penalty dispute in the sum of approximately USD 5 million. *
  • Represented contractor in arbitration in an extension of time dispute relating to one of Africa’s tallest buildings. The dispute arose from instructions which lead to a change in complexity. *
  • Representing a leading global power and automation technology company in claim for approximately USD 10 million on a solar project. The dispute arose from the employer’s failure to issue taking-over certificates and failure to effect associated payment. *
  • Representing firm of architects in arbitration against employer based on repudiation of contract. The value of claim being approximately USD 5 million. *
  • Assisted Fortune 500 company with forensic investigation regarding conduct related to services provided on a major power plant in South Africa and in reaching settlement of issues in the sum of USD 100 million. *
  • Representing international scaffolding company in arbitration proceedings in a claim for approximately USD 8 million for loss of overheads and profit
  • Representing major liquid fuels, chemicals and energy company in arbitration proceedings defending a claim for extension of time and costs to the value of USD 12 million. *
  • Advised various contractors and subcontractors on disputes arising from the execution of works in relation to the Medupi and Kusile Power Stations in South Africa. *
  • Advised on a project relating to a World Cup 2022 stadium. *
