Gerardo is a senior partner in DLA Piper's international arbitration, maritime, financial, aviation, banking and insurance practice based in our Mexico City office.

Gerardo acts as legal counsel to Mexican and international banks, shipping companies, airlines carriers as well as other specialized financial entities, including export credit agencies. His practice focuses in structuring, negotiating, and drafting loan facilities and restructurings for domestic and cross-border transactions, commercial lending, project finance and asset finance, among others. Gerardo is legal counsel for Mexican and foreign entities dealing with aviation matters with a specialty in acquisition, aviation leasing and chartering of aircrafts. Within his experience, Mr. Lozano has negotiated with governmental and private parties, and provided legal structuring and documentation on all sides in aviation and implementation of all kind of transactions, including financing, leasing and acquisition with the aircraft industry. Likewise, Mr. Lozano is also expert in obtaining the necessary permits and authorizations to operate as a foreign airline with the Mexican Aviation Authority, including the obtainment of renewals of the Mexican Convalidation of the Air Operator Certificate, the Mexican Air Operating Permit, and the authorization of routes, aircrafts and flight schedules. Review the contracts with all kind of service vendors. Negotiation with Mexico City International Airport for gates and space, as well as for other airport related services.

Likewise, Mr. Lozano has counselled shipping companies by providing sound legal advice on all areas of asset and project finance related with the shipping industry. Such services include, among others: registration, flagging and other administrative procedures in connection with vessels, including registration of security interests with the Mexican National Maritime Public Registry, incorporation, registration, and operation of Mexican shipping companies. Furthermore, Mr. Lozano has addressed issues arising from the complex and regulatory and liability environment in which ships operate.
In connection with the foregoing, Gerardo has experience in structuring and implementing financing for the acquisition, leasing, chartering and flagging of vessels, security and collateral schemes for cross-border and domestic financings of ships.
Furthermore, Mr. Lozano has counselled insurance companies in the process for the obtainment of authorizations for the operation of Mexican subsidiaries, as well as in insurance claims disputes in Mexico.

Gerardo has extensive experience in international arbitration and has advised clients in numerous jurisdictions in relation to international arbitration disputes in a wide range of sectors; including energy, infrastructure, insurance, maritime and corporate. Gerardo has represented clients and has acted as arbitrator in ad hoc and arbitrations administered under the rules of: the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce ("ICC"), the Cámara Nacional de Comercio de la Ciudad de México ("CANACO"), the Centro de Arbitraje de México ("CAM"), the International Centre for Dispute Resolution ("ICDR"), the London Court of International Arbitration ("LCIA"), the arbitration rules of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law ("UNCITRAL"), the Society of Maritime Arbitrators ("SMA") and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes ("ICSID") in connection with investment disputes related to the North American Free Trade Agreement ("NAFTA").

Gerardo Lozano has acted as arbitrator or as legal counsel in more than forty arbitrations. In its 2019 edition, Chambers and Partners recognized Mr. Lozano as one of the "Most in Demand Arbitrators". Likewise, Mr. Lozano was nominated by Best Lawyers 2019 edition as leading lawyer in administrative law, arbitration and mediation, international arbitration, banking, financial and corporate law, and M&A.
