About
Julia has diverse litigation experience and has appeared in the Employment Relations Authority, Human Rights Review Tribunal, Employment Court, District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal on a range of contentious matters. 

Julia's specialisms include employment investigations, management of employee performance and misconduct issues; change management processes (restructuring and redundancy); discrimination/human rights complaints; restraint of trade; health and safety compliance; and Holidays Act compliance. 
Julia has acted on a range of matters for large employers, including personal grievances, collective bargaining and strike actions, Labour Inspectorate Holidays Act audits, WorkSafe New Zealand health and safety prosecutions and civil claims involving breaches of restraints. 

Julia regularly presents at industry seminars and contributes to legal articles.  
 

EXPERIENCE

Successfully appeared in the Employment Court and Court of Appeal for Allianz in the defence against a claim from a former CEO– Elisara v Allianz New Zealand [2020] NZCA 184.
Was a part of the team in the Independent Review of conduct and culture at Weta Digital (now Weta FX) in 2020/21 (with Miriam Dean QC).
Advising and appearing on behalf of a large medical company on breaches of restraints and confidentiality against a former contractor in the High Court.
Advised on the employment aspects for Discovery Inc. on its agreement to purchase MediaWorks' TV business, comprising of: free-to-air channels, Three, Bravo, Three+1, Bravo+1, The Edge TV and The Breeze TV; streaming service ThreeNow; and multi-platform news and current affairs service Newshub.

Prior Experience

Julia previously worked for a boutique employment firm advising and appearing on behalf of a number of large employer clients. 

Prior to her employment career, she conducted a number of regulatory hearings and criminal prosecutions as part of the Auckland criminal warrant.
