Mark is a non-lawyer, non-practicing partner in the DLA Piper Litigation and Regulatory practice group leading the Electronic Data Management (EDM) team, a group of data intelligence experts managing data-enabled workflows at scale for disputes, investigations, and transactions across all practice areas and client sectors served by the global firm.

Having joined DLA Piper in late 2019, Mark has 25 years of experience in delivering actionable insight from large volumes of enterprise data via leading-edge AI and analytical approaches, providing foundational data quality for the firm’s legal advice in alignment with client strategic goals.

Recognised for his pragmatic, people-centric approach to innovation by his peers and clients, Mark champions the safe and effective use of frontier technology such as generative AI at the coal face of client mandates. Mark co-chairs the firm's Generative AI Taskforce for UK Litigation and Regulatory, focussed on delivering a change agenda that integrates AI into ways of working for firm lawyers, vets AI-enabled approaches to traditional human work, and delivers AI knowledge and skill development initiatives to lawyers and professionals.

EXPERIENCE

  • Advised a multinational life sciences company in a significant UK group litigation matter, leading disclosure and data strategy workstreams involving complex cross-border data populations, large-scale document review and collaboration between UK and international legal teams. Focused on delivering a defensible evidence identification and production process capable of supporting high-stakes litigation.
  • Led eDiscovery delivery for a global construction and infrastructure group in a series of high-value international arbitrations relating to major transport and stadium development projects. Managed end-to-end data collection and processing of tens of terabytes and strategic culling, review, and disclosure workflows across multiple jurisdictions and custodians.
  • Advised a multinational technology and e-commerce company on a large-scale internal tax investigation involving the forensic analysis of employee devices, collaboration platforms, cloud repositories and enterprise data sources. Developed and implemented defensible methodologies for custodian identification, keyword searching, validation and review of potentially relevant evidence.
  • Designed and managed AI-enabled review programmes for a multinational technology and e-commerce company as part of a complex internal investigation involving document populations measured in the millions. Combined technology-assisted review, advanced analytics and structured quality control processes to accelerate fact-finding while maintaining legal defensibility.
  • Supported a global engineering and professional services organisation in evaluating and optimising the technology underpinning its litigation and investigations function, including disclosure workflows, data reduction strategies, review optimisation, platform migration and emerging AI capabilities.
  • Developed scalable workflows for multinational organisations responding to high-volume and cross-border privacy and information-rights requests, including matters involving multiple languages, substantial review populations and complex privacy considerations.
  • Delivered an innovation partnership programme for a global hospitality company to explore the application of AI, knowledge management and legal technology solutions within the company's own enterprise to improve access to legal know-how and enhance operational efficiency within the global in-house legal and compliance team.
  • Delivered executive-level workshops and advisory programmes for a multinational financial services institution, global enterprise technology platform provider, and international consumer goods giant on the practical adoption of generative AI within legal functions, including governance, risk management and operational transformation opportunities.

Mark's previous roles include over a decade in technology, eDiscovery & data intelligence delivery from junior through leadership roles at global law firms and technology companies, three years heading his own eDiscovery consultancy and, most recently prior to joining the firm, six years in senior leadership roles with a leading legal service provider encompassing global data advisory, client service, and enterprise financial planning and analysis.
