DLA Piper secures victory on behalf of Samsung Electronics Co.

DLA Piper secured a victory for Samsung Electronics Co. in the Eastern District of Texas, with the court overturning a May 2025 jury verdict that had awarded Maxell Ltd. US$112 million for alleged infringement of three patents. The court granted Samsung’s motion for judgment as a matter of law, finding insufficient evidence to support infringement, and invalidated claims in two of the three asserted patents.

The court confirmed Maxell had not met its burden, invalidated claims in two of the asserted patents, and found insufficient evidence to support the infringement verdict on all three patents. US District Judge Robert Schroeder III denied Maxell’s requests for enhanced damages, interest, and a permanent injunction, and deferred issues of willfulness and damages until after appeal.

The DLA Piper trial team included Partners Sean Cunningham, Erin Gibson (both Washington, DC), Erik Fuehrer, Mark Fowler (both Palo Alto), Brian Erickson (Austin), Michael Jay (Los Angeles), James Heintz, Gianni Minutoli (both Reston), and Helena Kiepura (Washington, DC), with support from Associates Martin Ellison (Los Angeles), Sangwon Sung (San Francisco), Paulina Starostka, and Benjamin Mueller (both Chicago).
