Justice in action: Helping seniors access key legal resources
Our lawyers regularly provide legal services to vulnerable, low-income older adults.
- In Washington, DC, we collaborate with Legal Counsel for the Elderly and in-house legal teams from Capital One to host legal clinics that help seniors apply for Schedule H tax credits. This program allows low-income individuals to receive credits for property taxes or rent paid. The clinics have helped older adults access thousands of dollars in tax credits, helping them achieve greater financial security.
- At a community education and intake event in Washington, DC, lawyers from DLA Piper and T-Mobile volunteered with the DC Affordable Law Firm to assist nearly 40 homeowners in planning their legacies and safeguarding their assets.
- In Philadelphia, alongside SeniorLAW Center, Jazz Pharmaceuticals, and GSK, we have hosted legal clinics to help low-income, older Philadelphians complete their life-planning documents. Volunteers have answered seniors’ questions and helped them draft and execute their wills and other documents.
“The goal is for me to help them, but the result is I get so much more from them. Most of our clients are in their late 70s and early to mid-80s. Some have reached their 90s. The rich history they paint of life in America is so fascinating. The joy they exhibit after we are done with their documents is so rewarding. Even better, we get to share this experience with our clients, like Jazz Pharmaceuticals and GSK.”
– Senior Counsel Ray Williams (Philadelphia)
