Scotland has passed legislation to introduce a compulsory Deposit Return Scheme in Scotland (the “DRS”). The DRS will apply to single-use drinks containers, and obligations will be imposed on all parties in the supply chain. Similar schemes are to be introduced in other parts of the UK and Europe, in a move to promote greater recycling of materials.

In this series of articles, DLA Piper will examine the key obligations to be imposed on parties, and chart developments as Scotland progresses towards the launch of the DRS. In providing this insight, we will provide an international perspective to the scheme, drawing on experience from countries in Europe (and beyond) which have already implemented similar schemes, and provide advice on how businesses can prepare for the “go live” date for the scheme.
