About

Alex is an experienced intellectual property disputes lawyer who specialises in advising innovators on multi-jurisdictional patent litigation and related matters. He has successfully represented many pharmaceutical and biotech companies in disputes relating to their blockbuster antiviral medicines, chemotherapy agents and autoimmune disease treatments. Alex also conducts patent litigation in the telecoms, electronics and engineering fields, and advises on copyright, trade secret, industrial design, trade mark, unfair competition, pharmaceutical regulation, breach of contract and tortious disputes.

Alex’s practice includes validity and infringement opinions, patenting and litigation strategy, patent oppositions, freedom-to-operate advice, patent term extensions, patent amendment and prosecution, coordinating overseas litigation and patent office proceedings, and drug life cycle management.

Alex is qualified as a lawyer in both Australia and the UK with substantial experience in each jurisdiction. He has also served as in-house IP counsel for a multinational organisation. Alex has a technical background in genetics, and before commencing his legal career, he spent two years performing molecular biology research.

  • Advising an American pharmaceutical company on a regulatory dispute relating to its COVID-19 vaccines under the Gene Technology Act.
  • Coordinating patent litigation for a Swiss pharmaceutical company around the world, including assisting in obtaining a cross-border preliminary injunction to restrain the launch of a cancer medicine. *
  • Defending a challenge to the validity of an American pharmaceutical company's patent term extension relating to an antiviral medicine. *
  • Providing freedom-to-operate advice to a European biopharma company regarding its development of two biosimilars and preparing evidence to revoke patents relevant to another biosimilar. *

  • Acting for a Taiwanese consumer electronics company in patent litigation against American and Finnish competitors regarding the parties' smartphones and tablets. *
  • Representing a Chinese developer of two-way radios in copyright and trade secret litigation arising out of its alleged misuse of an American competitor's source code. *
  • Acting for an electronic programme guide developer in patent litigation against a British cable television provider relating to multi-source television. *

  • Acting for a German engineering company in the defence of breach of contract, copyright infringement and breach of confidence claims relating to audio equipment.
  • Representing a British household appliance innovator in enforcing its patent claiming a hair styler against a competitor.
  • Acting for the offshore drilling business of a Danish shipping conglomerate in patent litigation against its largest competitor. *
  • Managing the IP assets of two business units of an American aerospace conglomerate. *
