Sam Bodle is an experienced commercial disputes lawyer, undertaking a broad range of litigation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution matters for businesses and financial institutions. 

Sam has worked on a range of high-profile disputes across a number of sectors and geographies, with a particular focus on financial services disputes, as well as technology, biotech and energy. His practice is international in nature and includes matters in the United States, United Kingdom, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and the Netherlands.

Sam was also seconded for 6 months to the in-house litigation team of one of the world's largest banks, acting across a range of matters from interest rate hedging product (IRHP) disputes, lender liability matters and multimillion-dollar fraud claims.

EXPERIENCE

  • Representing a large national bank in a high-profile California State Court action brought against it by its former customer
  • Representing a prominent European bank in relation to a highly complex fraud claim (valued at over $1.5 billion) against its former director and his associates. This involved multi-jurisdictional international arbitration proceedings, insolvency proceedings, as well as interim relief, tracing, and enforcement proceedings in England, Cyprus, the Cayman Islands, Switzerland and Lichtenstein
  • Representing one of the world's largest banks in a multibillion-dollar ICC international arbitration arising out of the 2008 financial crisis and collapse of ABN Amro. This case was brought against a consortium of the world's largest banks and a state actor
  • Representing one of the world's largest banks in a dispute with a leading financial services firm over the operation of a portfolio of securitized mortgage loans and specifically, the interested rate hedging products incorporated into that structure
  • Successfully representing a prominent US payments provider in a number of disputes brought against it by customers and providing regulatory advice on related know your customer (KYC) issues
  • Representing a leading international bank in defending against a series of swaps mis-selling claims
  • Representing a foreign exchange and commodities trading house in a brokerage account dispute
  • Representing a US corporate in relation to Securites and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Department of Justice (DOJ) investigations launched into potential insider trading by its former CEO and current GC. Successfully resolving the investigation without any further agency action against the client
  • Representing one of the world's largest tech firms in an internal investigation relating to the causes and response to a high-profile cyber attack on its organization, including advising on an extensive set of remedial measures
  • Successfully representing an international retailer in defending against enforcement of an arbitral award and enforcing an arbitral award in California State Court, including acting as lead advocate at the merits hearing
  • Representing one of the world's largest ports and logistics providers in a series of international shareholder disputes and insolvency disputes, including multiple London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) arbitrations and litigation proceedings in Cyprus, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and in the London High Court. At the center of all these proceedings was the allegation that the client had been defrauded of its business interests
  • Successfully defending the world's largest supplier of natural gas in global enforcement proceedings brought against it in respect of a multibillion-dollar arbitral award
  • Successfully defending a prominent US biotech company in an LCIA arbitration brought against them by a former sales agent
  • Representing a US retail giant in its defense of various claims brought by a former supplier arising out of COVID-19
  • Providing pre-arbitration advice to an international hotel chain in respect of various hotel properties located in Africa and the Middle East
