Supporting families seeking humanitarian immigration relief
DLA Piper’s pro bono immigration work focuses on supporting families and children escaping crisis situations, helping them secure a stable future in the United States.
In 2024, our teams devoted more than 20,000 hours to humanitarian immigration legal assistance, representing more than 700 individuals, along with hundreds more through limited-scope projects. We collaborate with leading nonprofit organizations, such as Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC), the Tahirih Justice Center, the International Association of Women Judges, VECINA, and the American Bar Association Commission on Immigration, to help bridge the access-to-justice gap for immigrants seeking humanitarian relief.
In the past year, our lawyers have:
- Continued to help Afghan women judges and their families obtain permanent status
- Won asylum for multiple members of the LGBTQ+ community fleeing persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity
- Represented spouses and children seeking safety from domestic violence
- Helped abused, abandoned, and neglected children obtain paths to citizenship
