DLA Piper recognized as one of the Most Innovative Law Firms in North America by the Financial Times

DLA Piper was named one of the Most Innovative Law Firms in North America for both the practice and business of law by the Financial Times in the publication’s FT North America Innovative Lawyers 2021 report. In addition, the firm was named among the most innovative in three individual categories.

The Financial Times recognized Loren Brown, DLA Piper’s US vice chair and chair of the US Disputes practice, as one of the “Most Innovative Legal Practitioners” for his leadership of a team of lawyers advising healthcare and life sciences clients as they worked to bring life-saving therapies and vital vaccines to patients across the globe while managing a wide range of complex legal risks and challenges.

DLA Piper was also commended in the “Innovation in Creating New Standards” category for its impact on the Schrems II decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), which was based in large part on DLA Piper partner Andrew Serwin’s expert witness testimony. The CJEU’s decision invalidated the EU-US Privacy Shield and created new obligations for businesses transferring personal data pursuant to standard contractual clauses (SCC). Serwin, who serves as US chair and global co-chair of DLA Piper’s Data Protection, Privacy and Security and Cybersecurity practices, was selected as a witness based on his and the firm’s notable experience and innovations in privacy and security.

The firm’s work to counter efforts to disenfranchise voters in the key battleground state of Pennsylvania during the November 2020 US presidential election, led by partner Ilana Eisenstein, was recognized by the publication in the “Innovation in Social Justice” category. Eisenstein assembled a team of more than a dozen lawyers and paralegals that ultimately dedicated 1,300 hours to stop the efforts to block certification of election results in the commonwealth, which could have disenfranchised more than six million voters.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Financial Times for our efforts to pursue creative solutions for our clients and our ability to adapt to rapidly changing trends and expectations through our delivery of legal services,” said Frank Ryan, DLA Piper’s Americas chair, global co-chair and global co-CEO. “We are proud of our contributions to these important matters, which touch on areas as wide-ranging as public health, voting rights and data privacy and have made an impact that extends far beyond the scope of the business and legal community. We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively alongside our clients to help them achieve exceptional results.”

For five years in a row, DLA Piper has been recognized by the Financial Times as one of the top legal innovators in North America.
