Inspirational Women in Life Sciences Series – Maria Manuel Mota, The Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine

For our second interview as part of our annual Inspirational Women in Life Sciences Series, Mariana Ricardo, Partner from our Portugal team is delighted to introduce Maria Manuel Mota, Group Leader and CEO of The Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM), a research institute pioneering groundbreaking research from fundamental discoveries to innovative healthcare solutions.

Maria shared a number of great insights during their discussion, including how even though she is CEO, Maria still thinks of herself as a Scientist. Maria talked about her fascination with organisms and their capacity to live with each other, making the point that we do not live alone and that we need to communicate.

One of the challenges Maria identified was the lack of representation of women in the life sciences field. In Maria's view, the obstacles women face can be silent, and subtle.

“If I could teach my younger self something it is to not go around these obstacles, try to really break them and go forward.”

Looking ahead Maria thinks that AI represents a challenge, but also a huge opportunity for humankind to problem-solve.
