The pillars of the Energy Act 2023
In advance of the Energy Bill becoming the Energy Act 2023 on 26 October 2023, we prepared this infographic, designed to show at a glance the fourteen main parts to this important piece of legislation (there is also a fifteenth part for the general provisions, including those on territorial extent and commencement).
The measures in the Act, which creates a comprehensive regime for energy production and security and the regulation of the UK’s energy sector, were summarised in the government’s “overarching factsheet” (first published on 6 July 2022 and since updated). The factsheet divides the measures into the following three categories or pillars, which were adopted for our infographic:
- Leveraging private investment in clean technologies and building a homegrown energy system;
- Reforming our energy system to protect consumers from unfair pricing; and
- Ensuring the safety, security and resilience of the UK’s energy system.
Further information is available in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero's press release issued on the day of enactment, headed “New laws passed to bolster energy security and deliver net zero.”
