DLA Piper receives John Minor Wisdom Award from ABA Litigation Section’s Access to Justice Committee
DLA Piper is pleased to announce that the firm has received the 2022 John Minor Wisdom Public Service and Professionalism Award from the American Bar Association Litigation Section’s Access to Justice Committee. The award honors firms and legal professionals who have “made outstanding contributions to the quality of justice in their communities, ensuring that the legal system is open and available to all.”
The award is named for Judge John Minor Wisdom of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, who is best known for his ground-breaking decisions that reinforced the constitutional rights of disadvantaged, disenfranchised and under-represented individuals.
DLA Piper was recognized in large part for its longstanding and deep pro bono commitment to representing and advocating for the rights of children. This work includes representing children in the juvenile justice system, protecting the rights of unaccompanied children in immigration proceedings, representing students who are not receiving free and appropriate education, ensuring that children receive child support, working to end forced child marriage and assisting students who have been excessively disciplined in schools. DLA Piper has also litigated and helped secure appellate victories on behalf of children with disabilities, children in foster care and children facing extreme sentences.
“I am grateful for all that DLA Piper has done to hold systems accountable that are supposed to help children and families,” wrote Ira Lustbader, Litigation Director at Children’s Rights, in a letter supporting the firm’s nomination. “In their talent, support and how they show up to this important work, they are a shining example of a successful pro bono partnership. Large-scale systemic reform litigation to help children cannot happen without deep partners, and DLA Piper’s willingness to join in this effort makes meaningful social change possible.”
“We are proud of our efforts to advance justice for children who would otherwise not have a voice, both in the US and around the world,” said Lisa Dewey, DLA Piper’s pro bono partner. “It’s an honor to be recognized for the tremendous impact of this work, and we look forward to continuing to expand our efforts to provide legal assistance to children who need it most.”
